Because we fear we don’t listen…

This is one of the many standouts for me from the excellent movie documentary  Healing Voices  – an interview with Robert Whitaker summing up “the problem” with a system has one game in its playbook  –  indiscriminately throwing bucketfuls of drugs at the most complex and least understood challenge facing our society.

Here’s the problem :
We fear those who go into , say, “psychotic states” or “other states”.

And because we fear them we don’t listen
And because we don’t listen we tend to hurt them
What we’re really treating is our own desire to be safe.

– Robert Whitaker

There certainly other ways and there are undoubtedly many better ways.

Learning ways we can be less fearful of our experiences – both our own and others’ – might be a good place to start.
