we spend billions…

We spend billions in the wrong places.

We spend billions on systems to prevent us from taking the drugs we like to take.

We spend more billions on systems to make us take the drugs that they want us to take.

We spend even more billions of making sure those who are reluctant to take their drugs, do take them,  ignoring and even removing their human rights to just say say ‘no’.

We spend yet more billions on making people dependent, then on blaming them for their dependence.

We spend billions on repeating lies about broken brains and chemical imbalances. and and genes and how close we are to some major scientific breakthrough.

And we spend billions on blaming those who don’t step forward and ask for their help.

Imagine if we took only a small amount of that giant pile of wasted cash and spent it on things that’d actually make a real difference.

…and they say we “lack insight”.

Billions on bollocks – that’s what spending on mental health looks like.

Go Go Swing – Chuck Brown

chuck-brownIt don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got the doo wap swing

Doo-wap, doo-wap, doo-wap, doo-wap, doo-wap,  doo-wo-ow

It don’t mean a thing
If it ain’t got that swing
(doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah)
It don’t mean a thing
All you got to do is sing
(doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah)
It makes no diff’rence
If it’s sweet or hot
Just give that rhythm
Ev’rything you got
Oh, it don’t mean a thing
If it ain’t got that swing
(doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah)

we reduce ourselves to fiddling around…

fiddling around

When we reduce our understanding of human struggle
to a problem of brain chemicals
we reduce ourselves
to fiddling around with chemicals.

The Schizo Stereotype

Jim vanOs1Jim Van Os and his gert list of “schizo” stereotypes

“Schizophrenia” is not a thing its an idea.
Its not a thing we can catch or contract , become infected with or born with.
Its an idea,  a story.

And if you don’t believe it ask yourself why is The Schizophrenia Bulletin seriously considering removing the term from its name?

What something is – in this case the many ways people can struggle- and what we call it are separate things yet we tend to conflate the two.

And,  because we’d rather be texting and snapchatting with celebs, or shopping, or millions of other important stuff,  we want things to be simple so once we get a name for something, that’s it, we’re done. Brain.dis.en.gaged

Which is ok –  except when its not ok.

We do get to call ourselves whatever name we like but it pays to be more careful when we choose the name we use for others.
What we call someone else says more about us than it could ever say about them.

“Schizophrenia” is a story – of the worst kind
What limits our freedom is the stories we tell ourselves and the stories we tell each other…

“Schizophrenia” is a story of the worst, most limiting kind – a stereotype.

The “Schizo” stereotype might seem convenient and harmless – and like most stereotypes they all can seem that way – until we encounter the one that’s applied to us.

And once we stereotype someone, we blind ourselves – all we see from that point forward is the stereotype that we assigned them to.

And that’s our shit – not theirs.

The “Schizo” stereotype consists of three things…
1. A mystifying greek name
2. An unproven hypothesis of a genetic brain disease and
3. A hopeless view of outcome.

– Jim van Os

“Schizophrenia” is at best a stereotype

Its often called a “diagnosis” yet it is widely known to fail to meet the standard of what constitutes a valid medical diagnosis.

It does, though,  serve perfectly well the first part of original meaning of “diagnosis” – to set apart from –  in order to know.

As with other stereotypes, once awarded with this label people can easily become very much separated or cast-apart from the rest of us: de-humanised, denied their humanity, deemed non-human.

As with other forms of stereotyping we deny a person their humanity,  we cast them out to that “zone of non-humanity” as Franz Fanon called it,  so we can free ourselves from responsibility for them, so we can tell ourselves we’re ok with whatever is done to them.

Well, it’s not ok.

Hear My Voice

hear ny voiceHear My Voice

Hear my voice is a group is for those who embrace the voices they hear and want a space where the voices can speak for themselves in their own voice and to dialogue with other voices.

If you want to learn ways you can do that, practice finding and using your power and new ways of communicating with voices you hear then then it might be a place for you too.

This group is not therapy, or treatment, whatever they are. If you’re looking for someone who can make voices go away then you’re still looking: you will not find that here.

You join entirely at your own risk. Make your own choices.

all voices safe hereThis is a place for exploring, asking, sharing insights and making sense of your experiences both in seriousness and also having a bit of a laugh.

Hear My Voice is  Facebook group, you can connect with it via the link below…
Clearly you’ll need to have a facebook account [d’oh!]

Joining process
We have a simple process for joining where we make it clear what we’re about  and how our group works. You get to choose if that’s for you and decide if you can handle it.

Once you accept that we join you in; if you decide its not for you then you can leave at any time.

So, that linkety-link thing: Hear My Voice

Hear My Voice
hear ny voiceFor voices, by voices, of voices

What do we mean by “voice”?

There are many kinds, and anything and everything can have a voice. Whatever you want it to mean is what it means to you – just don’t expect it will mean the same to others. Whatever  it does mean might also change for you.

Usually, in here,  it simply means: “voice others don’t hear”. That’s it – there ain’t no need to make it any more complicated.

If someone else has a different meaning than you then do not deny them that, just share yours – that’s how we learn.

The group is founded on these:  “The Truths”
They are not “rules”, but truths that bear being spoken.

HEAR MY VOICE – THE TRUTHS
____________________________________________________
We hold these truths to be self-evident…
1. That all voices – body or not – are created equal. Those with bodies are no better than those without, those without bodies no better than those with bodies.

2. We have the right to bear and express emotions – we encourage it- but not to use them as weapons against others.

3. We accept conflict is a part of life and seek to explore it not shut it down – it is simply difference from which we can, and hope, to learn.

4. I am not to blame for what has happened to me or what might happen to me but only I can take responsibility for what I do in this moment.

5. None of us holds “The Truth” there is none [not even that one] – but we can all hold a piece of it and share it.

6. Sharing works better than shouting and telling.

7. We are all messed up – some of the time, some-how.

8. We can all heal – in our own way and in our own time.

9. None of us can fix another –none of us need diagnosing and we don’t need fixing.

10. Nothing works for everybody – just because I found something that works for me doesn’t mean it’s the answer for you..

11. Anything can work for somebody.

12. The only way I know what works for me is to try it.

13. We don’t tell each other who or what they are, what ‘s wrong with them or what they need to do…

14. Should-ing on me and should-ing on you is usually experienced as oppressive, even if not meant that way. Should nearly always sucks so just fuck off with “the shoulds”, ok?

15. Don’t do as I say – make your own choices…

16. Hatred and rage directed at others is oppressive – and if I do that it raises the questions: what is hurting me? And what can am I going to do about it?

17. The right to have my voice heard does not include the right to abuse others – nor the right to stop others being heard.

18. Don’t forget to be awesome.

19. If you come here to dump your shit on others please, just f*ck off – ok?

20. If you can’t handle these truths, go away, go do whatever you need to do until you can handle the truths – then come back if you like…

Fight the Power – Public Enemy

public enemy2Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

1989 the number another summer (get down)
Sound of the funky drummer
Music hittin’ your heart cause I know you got soul
(Brothers and sisters, hey)
Listen if you’re missin’ y’all
Swingin’ while I’m singin’
Givin’ whatcha gettin’
Knowin’ what I know
While the Black bands sweatin’
And the rhythm rhymes rollin’
Got to give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
We’ve got to fight the powers that be

As the rhythm designed to bounce
What counts is that the rhymes
Designed to fill your mind
Now that you’ve realized the prides arrived
We got to pump the stuff to make us tough
From the heart
It’s a start, a work of art
To revolutionize make a change nothin’s strange
People, people we are the same
No we’re not the same
‘Cause we don’t know the game
What we need is awareness, we can’t get careless
You say what is this?
My beloved lets get down to business
Mental self defensive fitness
(Yo) bum rush the show
You gotta go for what you know
Make everybody see, in order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say
Fight the Power

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power

Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
We’ve got to fight the powers that be

Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant, to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother, him and John Wayne
‘Cause I’m Black and I’m proud
I’m ready and hyped plus I’m amped
Most of my heroes don’t appear on no stamps
Sample a look back you look and find
Nothing but rednecks for four hundred years if you check
Don’t worry be happy
Was a number one jam
Damn if I say it you can slap me right here
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Right on, c’mon
What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
To make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be

The brain is a social organ – Dan Siegel

Dr Daniel Siegel talking about how he started out as a scientist, trained as a clinician, became a teacher – always excited to learn as much as he could about the mind.

Dan Siegel1… of how as a scientist he came to realise we have to say:

“there is so much we don’t know”

Dan Siegel2

“for me as a scientist working in the field of subjective suffering, as a clinician it really became important to be open to everything”

… of how was using the word mindfulness in a book about parenting to talk of ideas about being intentional before discovering a whole mindfulness community that overlaps with spiritual community..

“so what’s happened for me is a dissolution of the boundaries of science and spirituality”

…how when he was taking at  conferences on spirituality he would say

“I don’t know what spirituality is because I’ve never used the term before, please teach me..”

Dan Siegel5Invariably they say would say the same thing…

Spirituality is two things…
A sense of being connected to something larger than this bodily self
and a sense of deep meaning of the purpose of life.

“I don’t see any need for separation between disciplined practice of spirituality and disciplined practise of science

Dan Siegel6The mind is within us and between us.

“This view is not embraced by the field of psychiatry, its not embraced by the field of medicine, its not embraced by the academic fields, amazingly even of social neuroscience .

For now, the classic “scientific ” statement is ‘The.mind.is.what.the.brain.does’

When we choose to look at it this way ith this belief we get to what we have now…

Dan Siegel7“we look at someone whose mind – their thoughts, feelings, behaviour- is “off” and then we say “oooh! they have a bad brain!”

…and then

“we either iDan Siegel8solate them because we’re afraid of them, or you give them pills, or whatever you do…

Dan Siegel9“but if you don’t first start with communities of support then of course the brain is gonna stop functioning so well,

Dan Siegel‘the brain is a social organ

and that difference in how we view it is all the difference because we take responsibility for each other,

Dan Siegel11

because your mind and my mind are deeply linked ..

and that’s the nature of humanity

Dan Siegel
